Attendance Policies

Children cannot learn if they aren't consistently in school. When they are absent, they are missing important instruction, they experience delays in building confidence and are not able to participate in social opportunities that schools provide. Missed work and makeup work can also weigh a student down once they return.

Research shows that chronic absenteeism in Kindergarten and Pre-K programs is associated with lower academic performance in 1st grade and can lead to lower academic performance in 5th grade. These same students may experience struggling to read by 3rd grade.

Here is what the law states:

Texas State law requires that all students who have not reached their 19th birthday (or graduated) must be in attendance 90% of the days a class is offered. Austin ISD can file a truancy complaint if a student is absent from school on 10 or more days OR parts of days within a 6 month period of the same school year. Truancy occurs when a student is absent or tardy without a good reason. Once a student is enrolled in a public school, regardless of age or grade, that student and/or guardian is expected to follow the law. An unexcused absence and an unexcused tardy carry the same weight.

Examples of Excused Absences include: documented illness of the student such as the student having a fever/vomiting/diarrhea, religious days, appearances in court or a school activity.

Examples of Unexcused absences include: Oversleeping, missed the bus, on vacation, parent/other family members are sick, nothing to wear or "just not feeling like it".

Documentation and communication of absences is a priority between parent and school officials. A note should be provided to the school registrar as soon as the student returns or within 3 days. These notes assist the school with supporting guardians and being aware of why the absence took place. If you are experiencing difficulties getting your student into the building, please reach out to school staff for assistance.

Williams offers a FREE breakfast to all students which is a great incentive to get your student to school on time.
